2009 SCHEDULE

January 3. Emancipation Day Celebration. 2pm – 4pm. Historic re-enactments, storytelling, refreshments. An interpretive program about the day that the Emancipation Proclamation was issued and the impact it had on the African American population in 1863.

January 17: The Gift of Black Inventors. Jan. 17 - June 1, 2009. 10am - 4pm.

The Gift of Black Inventors highlights the numerous contributions of Americans of African descent to science and industry. The product of more than twenty-five years of research by its curator James E. Wright, Jr., the exhibition will display more than 125 items that feature inventions from the late 19th century through the present. The Gift of Black Inventors, opening reception will be on January 17th from 12 noon until 2pm. There will be a talk by curator James E. Wright, Jr. and special activities for the family to enjoy.

January 19: Dr. Martin Luther King Day Celebration. Noon to 3 p.m. Teen Oratorical contest sponsored by The Men’s Club of Trinity Baptist Church. Also a collection of photographs, artwork and documents about Dr. King, from The Newsome House Museum's archives will be highlighted. $2.00 suggested donation.

February 1: Black History Month Theme Program. 1pm to 4pm. The Story of the NAACP: 100 Years of Struggle and Triumph. Featured will be a guest speaker (TBA) and the PBS Frontline documentary: The Two Nations of Black America. Film will start promptly at 2:30 pm.

February 7: Documentary – The Souls of Black Girls. 12noon to 4pm.

Private screening of the critically acclaimed documentary, "The Souls of Black Girls" by Daphne Valerius. The documentary features candid interviews with young women discussing their self-image and social commentary from Actresses Regina King and Jada Pinkett Smith, PBS Washington Week Moderator Gwen Ifill, Rapper/Political Activist Chuck D, and Cultural Critic Michaela Angela Davis, among others. The Souls of Black Girls is a piece that attempts to provoke honest dialogue and critical thinking among women of color about media images and our present condition—internally and externally. Moderated and presented by Ms. Blanche Williams, National XM Radio Talk Show Host, who has been featured in Essence, Black Enterprise, and is a dynamic speaker, empowerment coach and an acclaimed author. Meet & Greet- with light refreshments- will be held at 12 noon; film will begin promptly at 1pm; Q & A / Workshop will begin immediately after the film.

2009 African American Heritage Film Series

Featuring films about real people and real historic events. All movies will be shown free of charge. Plot and rating information available upon request.

Feb. 14: "The Vernon Johns Story: The Road to Freedom". 1pm.

Starring: James Earl Jones

Feb. 21: "Disney’s Ruby Bridges". 1pm.

Feb. 28: "The Quiltmakers of Gees Bend" –Documentary. 1 pm.

Mar. 7: Family Activity Day with Black Inventions and Mr. James Wright. 1pm – 3pm. Families will have fun viewing and participating in activities using inventions by African Americans. Will be a true "Edutaining" Afternoon! $5 per family of 4 or less.

March 14: Precious Memories Scrap Booking Workshop. 11am – 2pm

Scrap booking workshop. Registration $10 per person. Scrap book consultant will give valuable tips on how to create lasting memories of family and events. Start a family project that can be passed on to future generations. Registration required.

March 28: African American Civil War Van Tour. 10 – 3pm. Departing from The Newsome House Museum. Details to be supplied. Cost: $40? Per person. Registration required; space is limited.

March 28: "Having Our Say": an Oral History Workshop. 1pm to 4pm. Free

This stimulating and informative workshop is for members of the community that are interested in participating in a new oral history project initiative that is being sponsored by The Newsome House Museum. This workshop will also provide basic information for participants interested in beginning their own oral history projects. The lecture/discussion format will include opportunities to practice and apply the material presented. The workshop is free and open to the public.

May 16: 5 Hour Self Publishing Workshop.  10am - 3pm.  Facilitated by noted poet, and owner of Spritual Concepts Publishing, Nathan Richardson.  Registration fee of $35 per person includes all workshop materials.  Lunch is also included.  Pre-registration is required.

June 13- July 28: "A Poet Speaks to Art" an exhibit by Nathan Richardson. This exhibit will feature photography and poetry by poet, publisher, Nathan Richardson of Suffolk, VA. Mr. Richardson will also facilitate two Ekphrastic Poetry workshops, one for adults and one for young people, during the month of July.

June 20: "Juneteenth – Freedom Festival". 12noon to 4pm. Join The Newsome House Staff , James A. Field’s House staff and local historic interpreters for an old fashioned celebration. King – Lincoln Park.   There will be music, step-teams, interpreters, storytelling, community information, and merchandise & food vendors. Free to the public. Note: Rain location will be the Farmer’s Market located at 28th & Jefferson Ave.

June 22 – 28: Cultural Explorations Summer Youth Camp – "All About Journalism". Campers will be introduced to the process of producing a newspaper. Visits to the Daily Press; Hampton University’s Scrip-Howard School of Journalism; and other field trips will be made. Campers will work together to produce their own newsletter; and learn the art of interviewing. The Newport News Star, an African American newspaper that Atty. Newsome served as editor of, will be used as an important resource. Registration is required. Cost: $30 per camper.

July 11: "Paint Me A Poem" Student Workshop facilitated by Nathan Richardson. 10am to 3pm. This workshop will introduce young people, Grades 6-12, Ekphrastic Poetry. + In this workshop, students will explore Ekphrasis – writing inspired by art. Students will collaborate on a booklet of poems and images from the workshop. Workshop supports both Art and English SOL requirements. Registration is required. Registration fee $35.

July 18: "The Poet Speaks to Art" Adult Workshop facilitated by Nathan Richardson. 10am to 3pm. A workshop on Ekphrasis for adults. Workshop will include discussion, collaboration, and a finished product created by the students which will be printed and available to take home at the end of the day. Registration is required. Registration fee $35.

August 1 – October 10: "What I See" an exhibit by photographer, Burton Caldwell. A stunning exhibit of photographs by Burton Caldwell that include landscapes, vistas, and scenery of the Hampton Roads area and beyond. Opening reception will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2009 from 12 noon to 2pm.
